O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when she was in high school. She made it to the top hundred round after the judges praised her singing ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the lower three again. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
