The father of O'Grady is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family lived in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. The first role she had was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring part on the ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included shows for television in independent film, as well as numerous other roles. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady played the secretary with long hair of the team between 1993 and 1996.
